Ingredients & Swaps

This is the list of ingredients I used when I made this homemade coffee ice cream with instant coffee. But be sure to check out my suggestions below for recommended substitutions if you don’t have everything on hand or want to use other ingredients.

  • Instant coffee granules – could also use instant espresso for a little more of a caffeine kick. Want the coffee flavor without the caffeine? Decaf crystals would work in this recipe, too.
  • Heavy cream – you could substitute unsweetened coconut cream, half-n-half, or even fat-free half-n-half.
  • Raw agave nectar – OPTIONAL: This sweetener has a syrup-y flavor to it and is perfect for adding depth, creaminess, and richness to recipes.
  • Monk fruit sweetener – could also use cane sugar and other sweeteners. Adjust amount accordingly.
  • Milk – can use cow’s milk or any plant milk, like oat, cashew, almond, and soy. Be sure to use unsweetened milk though, since the recipe calls for other sweeteners.
  • Vanilla extract – You can use vanilla extract, vanilla bean paste, or vanilla powder, which is what I often use.

Tips

Substitute coconut cream for the heavy cream and be sure to use a plant-based milk from the options above.

This recipe is already low-carb, but if you wanted to make it keto, just leave out the raw agave nectar. You could also substitute a little more of the monk fruit sweetener for the agave nectar.

Here are just a few suggestions for mix-ins and toppings for Ninja CREAMi coffee ice cream.

  • chocolate covered coffee beans
  • mini chocolate, white chocolate, or caramel chips
  • whipped cream
  • chocolate syrup

To add mix-ins, once the ice cream is spun, dig a hole down through the middle of the pint with a spoon. Make sure you reach the bottom of the pint. Fill the whole with your favorite mix-in(s), reattach the lid, and install the pint on the machine. Select MIX-IN. When it’s done processing, remove the lid and enjoy!
