Recipe Substitutions for Making Ninja FOODi Lasagna Casserole

Here are suggestions for substituting some of the ingredients in this recipe. Feel free to make your lasagna casserole in the Ninja FOODi using your favorite ingredients.

Ground beef I used one pound of grass-fed, lean ground beef in this recipe, but you could use Italian sausage for part or even all of the hamburger. You can also substitute ground chicken, turkey, or any other meat for the beef. You may need to adjust the seasonings however.

Marinara I have a favorite organic, traditional marinara sauce that I use for most of my Italian recipes. I like it because it’s a nice basic red sauce, and I often add more seasonings to make it more to my liking. But if you have a favorite pasta sauce you regularly use, feel free to use it in this recipe. Just about any tomato-based sauce will work.

Ricotta This recipe calls for whole milk ricotta cheese, but some grocery stores only carry part-skim ricotta. Either one works fine in the recipe. Even cottage cheese would be tasty, too.

Ninja FOODi baked lasagna made with cauliflower pizza crust layered with meat marinara sauce

Cauliflower pizza crusts This is my secret ingredient! I use cauliflower pizza crusts for two reasons. First, I don’t have to fuss with lasagna noodles. No cooking or trying to make them fit the pan.

Low carb crusts are smaller than traditional pizza crusts and usually fit perfectly in the Ninja FOODi. You just lay a crust down and add the next layers. Simple and fast!

Second, cauliflower crusts are low carb, so they give me a “pasta” layer without all the carbs that come with pasta. And bonus, they add more vegetables to the recipe! There are other low carb/keto crusts though, so try different ones to find your favorite. Below are some suggestions.

If you prefer not to use cauliflower crusts, try making this keto lasagna with low carb tortillas instead!

Low Carb Pizza Crusts

Be sure to read the ingredients list on these crusts. Even though they are low car/keto, they may still contain some ingredients that are off limits in your particular diet. I haven’t tried all of these so some may be smaller than the Ninja FOODi cooking pot.

FAQs about Ninja FOODi Lasagna Casserole

I haven’t tried to make a dairy-free version of this recipe, but you could certainly give it a try. Here are my suggestions.

For this recipe, I would substitute the mozzarella and parmesan for plant-based versions. I have favorite brands for each, so that would be an easy swap.

But the ricotta would be a bit harder to replace. I’m not aware of a dairy-free, vegan ricotta cheese product. There are vegan cream cheese products that might make a good substitution, though.

Absolutely. I’ve made the recipe a few times without meat, and it’s still just as delicious. Here’s what I did.

I’ve substituted vegetarian meat crumbles in place of the ground beef. Another time I left out the meat without substituting it and instead added two cups of veggies, like spinach and diced zucchini.

If you have leftover lasagna casserole that you want to freeze, place individual servings in plastic or glass containers that are freezer safe. Make sure to fill the container as full as possible to prevent ice crystals from forming on the top of your casserole. Use small containers if necessary.

Absolutely! Reheating in the Ninja FOODi will take about 15 to 20 minutes, though, depending on how large the serving is. I would suggest microwaving for faster results.
